The Golden Whistler Collectors Drawers was commissioned as a silverware storage cabinet. It was constructed wholly from recycled Red Cedar and reclaimed southern Silky-oak. For the marquetry in this piece and indeed all of my other works I prefer to use the natural colours of the veneers, relying on tones rather than strict colours. Only embellishing some veneers with a traditional form of ebonizing and heat/sand shading.
The red cedar in the doors and stand came from some very old skirting boards approximately 80-100 years old. All of which were covered in many coats of paint all different colours. The red cedar drawer fronts were once an old defunct card table top, the colour of which suited the job perfectly. The southern silky-oak was sourced from a few different locations, however all of it was reclaimed timber. My client asked me if I could incorporate something of his late farther’s barbeque stand into the cabinet as a memento. Timber that turned out to be Black Bean, so it was shaped and made into the drawer pulls.
The veneers in both the male and female Whistler were: Ebony, Orange, Yellow wood, Mulberry, Satin sycamore, Black heart Sassafras, Saffron heart, Camphor- laurel, Spalted Ivorywood, Spalted Tuckeroo, Spalted Pigeon Berry Ash, Ebonized Red Cedar, Ebonized Camphor-laurel and artificial ivory.
All of the shades used in the leaves, stems and gum nuts on the drawer fronts were just two species, Camphor-laurel and Hoop pine.
