The Regent Bower Bird Coffee Table
Hi and Welcome
I am Garry a Wood Artisan and Graphite Artist working exclusively in recycled and reclaimed timbers and graphite pencils. I live and work in the subtropical rainforest of southeast Queensland. Where for many years I have been creating and crafting fine woodworks and detailed drawings of Australian fauna.
Working The Wood
Wherever possible the mission is and has always been to work sustainably in either recycled or reclaimed timbers. So each piece I create already comes with a history, and that history keeps getting richer as the pieces get handed on to the next generation. In a former life it may have been a door or window frame, the side of an old cabinet or part of a demolished building. More importantly before that, it was a tree, a part of a forest and a part of a natural system. Having a very clear understanding of this encourages a creativity that ultimately enables quite a bit of diversity to flow throughout the work. Leaving each finished piece as unique as the people who commissioned it. Thus every work I create is the result of time, patience, dedication and a reverence for both the material and whence it came.
Pushing The Pencils.
As well as being a fine art technique and the fundamental basis to many of the visual and manual arts, drawing is a most wonderful and valuable tool. In fact for me it’s a way of life, in that everyday I draw something. Be it a continuation of a fine detailed realistic drawing that I am currently working on. A quick study, a rough design sketch for something in the workshop, or a detailed line drawing for a fine marquetry inlay. The medium I use for all this drawing is the humble and versatile graphite pencil. As for my favourite subject Australian fauna, I find graphite suits the work perfectly. So as it is with “Working The Wood”, every drawing I create is the result of time, patience and dedication. Coupled with a deep love and respect for both the subjects and the natural systems that they and indeed we are part of.
